Hot Stone vs Deep Tissue: Which Is Right for You?

Hot stone massage uses smooth, heated basalt stones to warm the muscles before and during the treatment, which allows the therapist to work deeper with less discomfort. It’s a good option if you’re new to deep-tissue work or find intense pressure uncomfortable.

Deep tissue massage, by contrast, relies purely on hands, forearms and sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle. It’s more targeted and often used for chronic tension or old injuries. If you’re deciding between the two, think about how your body usually responds to pressure — if heat helps you relax, start with hot stone; if you need focused, targeted work on a specific area, deep tissue is the better fit.
